Hiring a tradesperson can feel like a leap of faith. You're inviting a stranger into your home, trusting them with your property, and often paying a significant sum upfront. The good news is that a few simple questions — asked before you commit — can tell you almost everything you need to know.

1. Can I see your qualifications and insurance?

This is the most important question, and the answer tells you a lot. A professional tradesperson will have their documents ready and will share them without hesitation. If someone is evasive, says they'll 'send them over later', or gets defensive, that's a serious warning sign. For gas engineers, ask to see their Gas Safe registration card. For electricians, ask which competent person scheme they're registered with. For any trade, ask for proof of public liability insurance — ideally at least £1 million of cover.

2. Do you have references from recent local jobs?

A good tradesperson will have happy customers who are willing to vouch for them. Ask for two or three references from jobs completed in the last six months, ideally in Hart District — Fleet, Yateley, Hook or nearby. Then actually call them. Ask the reference: Was the work completed on time? Was it within budget? Would you use them again? These three questions will give you a clear picture.

3. Will you give me a written quote?

A verbal quote is worth very little if something goes wrong. Always ask for a written quote that clearly sets out what work will be done, what materials will be used, and what the total cost will be — including VAT if applicable. A written quote protects both you and the tradesperson. Anyone who refuses to provide one, or who gives you a vague estimate 'to be confirmed', should be treated with caution.

4. What's your timeline, and who will actually do the work?

Some tradespeople take on more work than they can handle, or subcontract jobs to people you haven't vetted. Ask when they can start, how long the job will take, and whether they'll be doing the work themselves or using subcontractors. If subcontractors are involved, ask whether they're also insured and qualified. You have every right to know who will be in your home.

5. What happens if something goes wrong?

No job is completely without risk. Ask what the tradesperson's process is if the work develops a fault, if something is damaged, or if the job overruns. A professional will have a clear answer — they'll explain their guarantee, their insurance, and how they handle complaints. If someone brushes this question off or implies nothing will go wrong, that's a red flag. Problems are rare with good tradespeople, but knowing how they'd handle one tells you a great deal about their professionalism.
